A road traffic accident refers to any accident involving at least one road vehicle, occurring on a road open to public circulation, and in which at least one person is injured.

A road traffic accident will often lead to a fatal or non-fatal injury incurred as a result of a collision on a public road involving at least one moving vehicle. Children, pedestrians, cyclists and the elderly are among the most vulnerable of road users.

A number of physical injuries can commonly result from the blunt force trauma caused by an accident, ranging to bruising and contusions to catastrophic physical injury.
